Zephyr 2017 Marlborough Chardonnay has received 5 stars, best buy and came in with a podium finish of 2nd behind Craggy Range 2018 Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay in the Cuisine New Chardonnay tasting 2019 – This was the 2ndyear in a row for Zephyr Chardonnay to place in the Top Ten.
Winemaker/owner, Ben Glover is ecstatic that his Chardonnay has taken a podium placing after the success of the 2016 Zephyr Chardonnay last year.
“It is a sign that we are onto something pretty good I think…” this vineyard has produced bloody smart chardonnay over the last 30 years and I think since we started focusing on it with our first Zephyr single vineyard Chardonnay in 2014 we knew its pedigree”
“The site was planted back in the late 80’s, when Chardonnay was becoming a bit unpopular … we persevered and now we are seeing some fantastic results coming off the old block”
The Zephyr Chardonnay is made from fruit entirely from the Glover Family’s own Kerseley Estate, located in the Dillon Point sub region of Marlborough. The Chardonnay was handpicked and whole bunch fruit was pressed straight to large format old French Oak, where it was allowed “go feral’, according to Ben. He goes’ on to explain the wine style is like a “coiled spring with deft savouriness and funky talent”.
The judges noted, “Grown from the vines that are over 30 years old, this perfectly balanced wine makes a serious impression. Youthful with generous fruit flavours that are elegantly oaked and punctuated by some intriguing flinty notes. A very focused palate with genuine length.”
